AYSO National defines which division a player should be assigned based on the child’s age on August 1st.
Although AYSO National prefers that all players play in their age-appropriate division, they do allow regions some flexibility to have players “play-up” to an older division.
Our experience in
Belmont-Redwood Shores AYSO has been that it is almost always preferable
to have a child play in their age appropriate division. While we will
make exceptions to this rule, in general we prefer to go with the age
appropriate groupings as historically these have provided a better
experience for the players. Playing up often results in the kids
becoming intimidated by older players and leads to them discontinuing
soccer; whereas playing in their age, even when they are really good,
helps develop them as leaders on the field.
We apologize but AYSO National does not permit players to play down in a younger division. AYSO National defines which division a player should be assigned based on the child’s age on August 1st and this is the youngest division in which a child is eligible.
